Bishop McGinnis died Monday, June 12, 2017 and was interred at Lake Lawn Park Mausoleum on Tuesday, June 20, 2017 at a private service. He was a native of Owensboro, KY and was born on March 3, 1934. He was the son of Robert S. McGinnis, Sr. and Thelma Pearman McGinnis. He resided in Gonzales, LA since 2008.
Robert is survived by his wife Laura, 1 son, Edward McGinnis, 2 daughters, Marcia McGinnis and Joni Clark, 4 step-children, George and Erroll Panzeca, Michelle Vogel and Gina La Nasa, 17 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert S. McGinnis, Sr. and Thelma Pearman McGinnis as well as one son, Robert S. McGinnis, III.
He graduated from Owensboro Senior High School, Owensboro, KY and earned degrees from KY Wesleyan College (BA), Owensboro, KY, Southern Baptist Theological Seminary ( M.Div.), Louisville, KY, University of the South (M.S.T.), Sewanee, TN, University of New Orleans, (M.Ed), and Vanderbilt University (D.Div.), Nashville, TN. He also studied Biblical Archeology at the Hebrew University, Jerusalem, Isreal.
Robert was a professor at Dillard University, New Orleans, LA for 29 years and retired as Dean of the Division of the Humanities. He taught briefly at Tulane University and St. Mary’s Dominican College in New Orleans, LA.
He was consecrated Bishop in 1979 and served in that capacity as Bishop for The Armed Forces. He was commissioned as a U.S. Navy Reserve Chaplain in 1969 and also served the Marines and Coast Guard. He retired in 1994 as a Navy Captain. He also served as Chaplain of the American Legion Post 23, New Orleans, LA and was a member of the Military Chaplain Association.
