Robert Charles "Nupe" Newman, 81, died Friday, May 27, 2022. He was preceded in death by his father Robert E. Newman, mother Aileen Ennis Newman, sister Bettyanne Newman Hall and daughter Angelina Newman. He is survived by his beloved wife of 20 years Louise LeBlanc Newman; son Robert Newman Jr.; daughter Christina Newman; stepchildren John Shay III (Amy), Tim Shay (Erin) and Rebecca Shay Clary (Luke); grandchildren Caleb Howell (Chelsea), Madison Shay, Kwaun Enriques, Anderson and Katie Bitzenhofer, Collin and Emily Shay, and Eloise, Hayes and Jack Clary; great-granddaughter Olivia Lynn Howell; and nephews Rick Hall (Tammy) and Scott Hall (Monica).
Born August 24, 1940 in Kansas City, Missouri, Nupe came to New Orleans with his family in 1946. He attended Gentilly Terrace and McDonogh 39 grammar schools and Beauregard Junior High School. He graduated from Fortier High School in 1958 where he was a member of Lambda Beta Omega fraternity. He earned a mechanical engineering degree from LSU and was a member of Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity. In 1969, Nupe acquired Overhead Door Company of New Orleans from his father, who started it in 1946; he sold the company in 2011.
In the 70s and 80s, Nupe enjoyed sail boating on Lake Pontchartrain. He also enjoyed skiing the Colorado Rockies every winter until about 75 years old. He had many friends as a member of the Lee Circle YMCA. He served as president of American Subcontractors Association New Orleans chapter. In the 80s and 90s, he spent social and sporting time as a member of Over the Mountain Athletic Club. In the mid 90s, he joined Metairie Country Club where he socialized and golfed frequently.
Nupe was an avid LSU Tiger fan and a football season ticket holder for decades. He never missed a Mardi Gras, French Quarter Festival or Jazz Fest. He loved travelling the world with his dear wife "Weezie" and many of their friends. Nupe also loved spending time with friends and family, including Wednesday night "Boys Night Out" and weekly lunches with his son Rob.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend the funeral service in the chapel of Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home, 5100 Pontchartrain Blvd. in New Orleans, on Friday, June 3, 2022 at 2:00PM. A visitation will be held at the funeral home beginning at 12:00PM. The interment will follow in Metairie Cemetery.
