Robert Nolan Michiels passed away suddenly on Monday, January 23. Rob was born and raised in New Orleans and lived in Metairie, Louisiana. He was born on April 9, 1962 to Leo Peter Michiels, Jr. and Nancy Morarity Michiels. He is survived by his beloved wife, Pamela Gieseler Michiels, to whom he was married for 31 years; his children, Anna Elizabeth Michiels and Peter Daniel Michiels, whom he adored; his siblings, Leo Peter Michiels III, Joan Michiels McCullough, and Lawrence Michiels (Melissa); and many dear family members and great friends.
Rob was a student of history and genealogy, and he and Pam made a wonderful trip to Ireland, one of his longtime dreams, just a few months ago. He loved to cook, and enjoyed several years competing with his very loosely organized but fun-loving barbecue team. Rob will be remembered for his “dad jokes,” his ability to fix anything, and most of all his true kindness and loyalty - if you needed anything, you could always count on him. He enjoyed his participation in several Carnival organizations. Above all, he loved spending time with his family.
Rob received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of New Orleans, and was a licensed professional civil engineer, naval architect, and marine engineer. He loved his work in ship design, and leaves behind many colleagues who were also dear friends.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, February 1, 2023 at Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home. Visitation begins at 11:00 AM, followed by a funeral Mass at 12:00 PM. Interment will be in Metairie Cemetery. Those who would like to honor Rob’s memory may make a donation to Hogs for the Cause, which helps alleviate the financial burdens of families with a child battling brain cancer. www.hogsforthecause.org.
