Raymond attended Corpus Christi Elementary School and then graduated from Joseph S. Clark High School.
He served in the U.S. Army and was stationed in Germany. He received an Associate in Science from Delgado College, and Bachelor’s of Science degree from Loyola University.
He worked as a Safety Engineer at Avondale Shipyard for almost 30 years until he retired.
Raymond served on several boards and organizations, including the Preservation Resource Center (Board member), Ladies in Red (Chairman), Vieux Carre’ Commission (Board member), Esplanade Ridge/Treme’ Civic Association (President/ Board member), the Conquistadors Social and Pleasure Club, La Creole Association, Creole Heritage Center, and the Greater New Orleans Bonsai Society (Co-founder.)
Raymond is survived by his loving wife, Hilda Wing Young; sons, Raymond R. Young, Jr. and Knyle “Chris” Young; daughters, Angele Boutte (Corey) and L’jeanne Bates (Ravi); brothers, Wallace Young, Jr. (Myra), and Ellis Young (Marlene); grandchildren, Payton, Colin, and Carson Bates, and Isabella and Sophia Boutte; as well as a host of nieces and nephews.
Raymond is preceded in death by his parents, Wallace Young, Sr. and Laura McCarthy Turner; his sister, Betty Ann Miller; and his aunt, Rose Ratleff.
Family and friends are invited to attend a visitation for Raymond Young beginning at 8:00 am on Saturday, April 1, 2017 at Corpus Christi Church, 2022 St. Bernard Ave in New Orleans. Mass will follow at 10:00 am. Interment will take place at Lake Lawn Park Mausoleum. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Preservation Resource Center in Raymond Young’s name.
