Provino "Vinny" Mosca, beloved by family and friends, born in Aurora, Il, on Friday, February 13, 1948, to Elsie Louise DeBartolo and Nicholas Alfred Mosca passed at home surrounded by his family on October 26, 2022, at the age of 74. He will be greatly missed by his loving wife, Karen, and family. In 1958, Vinny's parents brought Vinny at age 10, to New Orleans, where they would work with his father's parents, Provino and Lisa Mosca, at Mosca's Restaurant. His early life revolved around the family restaurant where he learned the value of hard work and social interaction.
When his father opened Elmwood Plantation Restaurant as Co-owner and Chef, Vinny continued his work in the hospitality industry serving as a Maître D'. Vinny attended De La Salle High School where he was a member of the Chess Club. He obtained his undergraduate degree from MacMurray College in Jacksonville, Il., after which he entered Notre Dame Seminary where he began his lifelong friendship with Archbishop Philip Hannan. Archbishop Hannan assigned Vinny to run his summer "Witness" camp for children living in poverty, the beginnings of his lifelong commitment to public service. His desire for family ultimately led him to leave the seminary. He graduated from Loyola University New Orleans College of Law in 1978, where he excelled in Loyola's Law Clinic participating in many trials. Upon graduation he worked for Harry Connick at the Orleans Parish District Attorney's office.
Vinny began his career in Criminal Defense work in 1979 starting his private law practice in 1980. He was a prominent defense attorney who handled high profile clients from all walks of life treating each with kindness, respect and diligent legal representation. When he was asked how he could represent criminals Vinny often said, "you can't put a person in jail without representation and everyone deserves good representation". Vinny was admitted to practice law in the United States Supreme Court, United States Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals and United States District Courts: in Louisiana, Maryland, Mississippi and Washington D.C. Vinny was a Traffic Hearing Officer in First Parish Court and Judge Pro Tempore in First Parish Court, Jefferson. He was a member of the Federal, State and Jefferson Parish Bar Associations and served as General Counsel of the Jefferson Parish Finance Authority. He served three terms as Mayor of the City of Harahan, and he served two terms as a Councilmember in Harahan.
A devoted family man, he spent countless hours coaching his daughters' team sports and going to track meets with his son. Vinny was an active supporter of St. Rita Church's Pecan Festival, making pots of spaghetti and meatballs with his dad and muffulettas with his wife, Karen.
Vinny is predeceased by his parents, Nick and Elsie Mosca. He is survived by his devoted wife, Karen Breaux Mosca, his children Vanessa Mosca Alphonso (Donald), Stephanie Mosca Steckerl (Rodolfo), Amy Mosca Lepley (Michael), Jonathan Robinson Mosca (Jennifer), Charles Archer IV (Nonkululeko), Michael Archer and Paul (PJ) Archer (Jillian). He is also survived by his brother Nicholas Mosca (Andy), his aunt Mary Jo Mosca, and his cousin Lisa Mosca. He is additionally survived by 11 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren and his first wife Lynne Robinson Mosca. The family would like to give special thanks to Dr. Steven Ramee for his kind compassionate care and friendship.
Funeral services will be held at Mater Dolorosa Catholic Church, 1230 S. Carrollton Ave, New Orleans on Friday, November 4, 2022. Visitation at 10:00 am with words of remembrance at 11:30 am followed by funeral mass at noon. Private family burial to follow.
