It is with great sorrow that the family announces the passing of Phyllis Sullivan Stacy, the best mom in the world. She died peacefully at the age of 87 on February 22, 2023. Phyllis was preceded in death by: her parents, Hobart Sullivan, Sr. and Natalie Sullivan; her brother, Hobart Sullivan, Jr.; her husband, Edwin F. Stacy, Jr.; her daughter, Theresa Stacy; and her grandson, Matthew Carl. She is survived by: her four children, Mark Stacy (Debbie), Erin Carl (Bill), Eric Stacy (Kerry), and Greg Stacy (Joan Leblanc); her grandchildren, Scott Stacy (Tia) and Kelly Stacy; and her great-grandchildren, Grant Stacy and Ryan Stacy.
Phyllis was born in Philadelphia but moved coast to coast following her father who was in the navy. After he retired, they moved back to Philadelphia, where she attended Mt. St. Joseph Academy. She graduated from Mt. St. Joseph Academy as the Valedictorian of her class, and later went to Chestnut Hill College to pursue a degree in fine arts. It was while she was visiting an art museum that she met her husband.
Once she married, she moved to Seattle where she worked while her husband worked on his masters in Marine Biology. Ocean Springs was next form them, and three more children were born in that time. Once they moved back to New Orleans, Ed’s home town, that was where their last child was born.
Phyllis spent her whole life helping others. She served as the president of her ladies’ club at church, the president of her church council, as Eucharistic minister, president of the Ladies’ Leukemia League (where she began the Tree of Hope), president of the Life Insurance Auxiliary of New Orleans, and as president of the Ladies’ Club at Bissonet C.C. Other charitable organizations in which she took part included St. Michael’s School, St. Elizabeth’s Guild, St. Vincent’s Guild, St. Theresa of Missionaries, the Auxiliary Board of EJGH, and the Acres of Green Garden Club (where she put her fine arts degree to good use, arranging flowers and taking photographs). She also enjoyed being a volunteer at NOMA.
Known as “The Butterfly Lady”, she enjoyed giving tours to school children at the botanical gardens.
She loved riding in Iris all the way through 2022 at the age of 86.
She and Ed were supporters of City Park, WYES, the United Way, and their respective high schools and colleges throughout their 63 years of marriage.
They loved travelling and went to 63 countries on 6 continents. They lived their lives with the motto: “all for the greater glory of God.” Her loves were cooking and baking her grandmother’s Italian recipes with her daughter.
She finally passed away from the cancer she fought for eight years with her friend and family visiting.
In lieu of flowers, please donate to the cause of ovarian cancer research in her memory.
