Myra Lois Mersky Soboloff passed away on Monday, December 28, 2020 in Mandeville, Louisiana. Beloved mother of Joan Soboloff (Paul Meeker) of Covington, Louisiana and Robert H. Soboloff (Dori Singer) of Houston, Texas. Sister of the late Beatrice M. Gold and Sam Mersky. Grandmother of Hope Watson (Kurtis Lorite) of Perth, Australia, Philip Watson (Alix St. Pe’) of Covington, LA and step-granddaughter Sarah Meeker (Ian Keller) of Albuquerque, New Mexico. Great-grandmother of Idris Lorite of Perth, Australia. Myra was predeceased by her parents Louis Mersky and Fannie Silverman Mersky of Minneapolis, MN and her former husband, Dr. Hyman R. Soboloff. Myra was a graduate of The University of Minnesota where she received a B.A and The Tulane School of Social Work where she received a master’s degree and later taught until she became a mother. She was a board certified social worker. She resumed her career in 1975 as an assistant professor of Neurology at LSU Medical Center where she was the assistant director of the Epilepsy Unit of Charity Hospital. She was a field instructor and unit coordinator at the Tulane School of Social Work, and an assistant professor at LSUMC Dept. of Family Medicine Residency Training Program. Myra belonged to many boards, including the Advisory Board of Orleans Parish Juvenile Court, Children’s Bureau, Community Service Center, Governor’s Commission on Law Enforcement, Holman Center, Jewish Community Center of New Orleans, Jewish Welfare Fund (Women’s Division,) Temple Sinai Sisterhood, National Council of Jewish Women, and Professional Advisory Committee for the Louisiana Epilepsy Association. She was the recipient of awards and recognitions from Orleans Parish Juvenile Court in 1968, The Hannah Solomon Award from The National Council of Jewish Women for continuing commitment to youth and children in 1968, for service to the Louisiana Governor’s Commission on law enforcement and administration of criminal justice in 1970, and The George Freeman Award from the Louisiana Conference of Social Welfare in 1971 for her outstanding contribution to the field of social welfare. In addition to Myra’s support of children’s and civil rights, she was an ardent supporter of the arts. Her fondest memory was her evening conducting the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra, where she was a season ticket holder for nearly seventy years. In her retirement, Myra was a docent for the New Orleans Museum of Art and a lady tenor with the LPO Symphony Chorus. She was also a long-time supporter and season ticket holder of New Orleans Ballet Association. Myra was the last surviving member of her bridge group that met every Tuesday for over 60 years. Our Mother was a person of pride, honor and dignity. She lived her life with high standards and morals. She was kind and accepting of everyone. Mom lived a full life with a true spirit of adventure. She considered her greatest accomplishment in life to be her children, grandchildren and great-grandchild. She will be deeply missed.
