Mordelo Vincent Breckenridge “Delo” passed away peacefully on Saturday, May 20th, 2023. A New Orleans native, Delo attended Jesuit High School where he graduated in 1965. Afterwards he attended Louisiana State University and the University of New Orleans, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Economics. Delo was a proud member of Delta Kappa Epsilon at LSU where he forged lifelong friendships. While attending UNO he joined the New Orleans Fire Department. In addition to performing courageously fighting fires, Delo was driven by a sense of duty and curiosity to take on important projects for the NOFD such as modernizing emergency response services and spearheading OSHA compliance including the recognition and treatment of PTSD for his fellow firefighters. After a long career he retired as District Chief. Delo played squash and later in life became an avid tennis player, always accepting a game from anyone that wanted to play. Delo took great joy in belonging to multiple tennis groups and played several times a week for many years. After years of increasing symptoms, Delo was diagnosed with Dementia, specifically Frontal Lobe Atrophy. For those that understand the gradual decline with cognitive failure, that was the start of “the long goodbye.” Delo was predeceased by his mother, Esther Dupuy Breckenridge, his father Hugh Breckenridge and sister Wilder Breckenridge Selman. He is survived by his wife Juanita Martinez Breckenridge “Nita”; son Hugh Wilder Breckenridge, wife Laura Tubbs Breckenridge and children Anne Wilder Breckenridge, Miller Louise Breckenridge and Hugh Harris Breckenridge all of New Orleans, Louisiana; his son Mordelo Vincent Breckenridge Jr. “Beau,” wife Jacqueline Brown Breckenridge of West Palm Beach, Florida and children Charlotte Walker Breckenridge and Wilder Brown Breckenridge and his sister Sara Breckenridge Wright of Paris, France. He also leaves behind many nieces and nephews from our extended families. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Jesuit High School of New Orleans. A memorial will be held at Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home on Wednesday June 7, 2023, with visitation beginning at 1:00pm and Last Alarm from the NOFD followed by interment in Metairie Cemetery.
