Mary Lou Rice passed from this life on May 12, 2016, at the age of 26. Born in Shreveport, Louisiana, on February 23, 1990, in her short life she was known for her strong sense of justice and care for underdogs, both human and canine, always backed up with a strong smile. Mary rescued numerous abused dogs, always offering help for those in need. She is survived by her mother and stepfather, Donna Allen and William Elliott; her father and stepmother, Michael and Leslie Rice of El Dorado, Arkansas; her sisters, Marissa Rice and Tara Murphree of El Dorado, Rebecca Smith of New Orleans, and Jennifer Brindler of Alexandria, Virginia; Grandparents Ron and Angelina Rice of Shreveport, Fred and Diane Schaejbe of Fredonia, Wisconsin; and Eleanor and the late Frank Elliott of Covington, Louisiana. A Requiem Mass will be held at the the chapel at Christ Church Cathedral at 2919 Saint Charles Ave., New Orleans, on Monday, May 23, at 10:30. A reception will follow the Mass at 6330 St. Charles Ave. A private internment will take place at the family plot at Old Mansfield Cemetery, Mansfield, Louisiana. Officiating at both services is Mary’s great uncle, The Rt. Reverend Charles Edward Jenkins, III, retired Bishop of the Diocese of Louisiana.
