Mary Doyal Maher, 93, of New Orleans passed away peacefully in her sleep on November 28, 2016. Mary Ethel Doyal was born in Washington, D.C. to Frank and Dorothy Doyal on September 13, 1923. She graduated from Garfield Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in Washington, D.C. She served as an Army nurse post-World War II in Germany and Japan. She was awarded the Army of Occupation Medal, World War II Victory Medal, Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal. Mary married the late Doctor Frederick William Maher, Jr. on April 17, 1951 in New Orleans. Mary is preceded in death by her husband Frederick 'Red' Maher, Dorothy Doyal Dickinson, Frank Doyal and her parents. Mary is survived by her four loving children and their spouses: Anne and David Batt of Metairie; Doctor Frederick 'Rusty' and Diana Maher of Covington; Doctor Timothy and Lois Maher of Mandeville; and Doctor Brian and Barbara Maher of Gulfport. She is survived by her twelve devoted grandchildren: Doctors David and Brendan Batt; Doctor Katie Maher Schmidt and Kyle Maher; Christopher, Mark and Kelly Maher; and Doctors Megan and Mary Maher, Thomas, Molly and Maureen Maher. She is also survived by great-grandchildren Boden and Wyatt Batt. Mary blessed family and friends with her warmth, quick wit and taste for adventure. She was an avid gardener and traveler. Most important was her devotion and love of family. She was raised Baptist and converted to the Catholic faith as an adult. She was loved by all. Pallbearers will be David and Brendan Batt, Kyle, Christopher, Mark and Thomas Maher and Rudolph Schmidt. Funeral service will be held Saturday, December 3 at Lake Lawn Funeral Home in Metairie. Visitation will be held from 10 am- 12 pm followed by Mass officiated by Father Harry Grile C.Ss.R. Burial will follow at Greenwood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be given to the Blessed Father Seelos Center.
