Mary’s life was filled with love, service, and commitment to others. Born in New Orleans, she was a proud graduate of St. Mary’s Dominican, Louisiana State University, and Tulane University, where she earned her degree in social work, and her passion for helping others became a cornerstone of her life. As a member of ZTA Sorority, she fostered lifelong friendships and exemplified the values of service and sisterhood. A devout parishioner of Our Lady of the Lake, her faith was central to her life, guiding her with strength and grace. Mary also enjoyed traveling, baking, and advocating for inflammatory breast cancer detection. However, above all, Mary’s greatest joy in life was her family. She loved them fiercely, with an unwavering devotion and a heart full of pride. She will be most remembered for the love she poured into her roles as a wife, mother, sister, daughter and friend.
Mary is survived by her loving husband of 32 years, Terry Knepper; children John Riley Knepper, Brennan Joseph Knepper (Janet), and Caroline Elise Knepper; mother Mary Theresa Matto Gereighty; siblings Patricia Gereighty Hunt (Michael) and John Andrew Gereighty III (Stephanie); and nieces and nephews Shane, Ryan, Elizabeth, Rebecca, Grace, Claire, and Jacob. She was preceded in death by father John Andrew Gereighty, Jr.
A visitation for Mary will be held Thursday, September 26, 2024 from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM at Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home, 5100 Pontchartrain Blvd., New Orleans, LA 70124, followed by a funeral Mass at 12:00 PM, with interment thereafter at Metairie Cemetery.
