Mary Ann Mattingly Sherry entered this world on April 15, 1940 and passed away peacefully on April 3, 2023, surrounded by her family. Born in New Orleans to the late Charles B. and Marie Eberts Mattingly, she remained in the New Orleans area throughout her lifetime. She is the wife of attorney Mettery I. Sherry, Jr. for over 61 years and is survived by her husband, mother of Charles Sherry of Colorado, Sylvia Sherry of Santa Barbara, CA, and Dean M. Sherry, MD (Jennifer) of Ardmore, Oklahoma, grandmother of Alexander Sherry, MD(Carrie), Emily Sherry MD, Caroline Sherry, and Rachel Sherry, and great grandmother of Jude Sherry (son of Alexander and Carrie). Mary Ann is the sister of Carolyn Aguillard, Elaine Bindo, and C. Walter Mattingly. She is survived by numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. She attended St. Anthony of Padua and St. Dominic elementary schools, graduated from St. Mary’s Dominican High School, and Loyola University of New Orleans with a degree in Mathematics. She attended the University of New Orleans and graduated with a master’s degree in business with high honors. Professionally, she was a forensic document examiner since 1986, owned her own business, and assisted the legal community with document and handwriting issues throughout Louisiana. She made presentations on handwriting throughout the United States, England, and Scotland. She held a membership in the National Association of Document Examiners, where she was board certified and recognized as a Diplomate. Mary Ann was active in numerous business and civic organizations including the Law League of Louisiana, the Jefferson Bar Association Auxiliary, Metairie Literary Guild, Leading Ladies, NOMA Volunteers, East Jefferson General Hospital Auxiliary, the Innerwheels of Metairie, the Ladies Leukemia Society, and the Marians of New Orleans. When asked what she enjoyed in life, Mary Ann responded, “Her Catholic faith, people, music, movies, theatre, travel, new experiences, and most importantly, her family.” She also took great satisfaction in her handwriting business by helping people in court before a judge or jury. Mary Ann loved nurturing her children and took pride in caring for her grandson, Alex, who came from Oklahoma to live with her and Mettery for five years to attend Jesuit High School. Mary Ann said she would never forget her experiences visiting the great museums of Europe in London, Paris, and Madrid, as well as Egypt, St. Petersburg, and the inspiring Sistine Chapel in Rome. She never forgot her visit to the pyramids and the opportunity to ride a camel there. Mary Ann told a friend that the camel turned its huge, ugly head and snarled at her. It was frightening, but she was glad she rode the huge beast. She embraced physical fitness throughout her adult life, including jogging, walking, yoga, and seven consecutive years attending Rancho La Puerta with her husband for a wellness and physical renewal. She attended St. Ann and St. Clement of Rome Catholic Churches. In lieu of flowers, Masses preferred and are welcome. Relatives and friends are invited to attend the Funeral Mass in the chapel of Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home, 5100 Pontchartrain Blvd. in New Orleans, on Monday, April 10, 2023 at 11:00AM. A visitation will be held at the Funeral Home beginning at 9:00AM. The interment will follow at Metairie Cemetery.
