Mrs. Martha Jane C Sabrio

Martha Jane Cook Sabrio, 89, a longtime resident of Metairie, passed away peacefully at home on August 22, 2014. She was born on January 4, 1925, in Philadelphia, Mississippi, the daughter of William David Cook and Agnes Rush Cook. She graduated from Hotel Dieu School of Nursing in 1946 as a registered nurse. In 1946 and 1947 she worked as a nurse in Native American tribal lands in Nebraska, Arizona, and New Mexico. She married Robert Louis Sabrio of New Orleans on November 27, 1947. For over 60 years she was a faithful member of St. Francis Xavier parish, where she participated in many ministries, including the folk choir and the St. Vincent de Paul Society, in which she was active up to the time of her death. In 1976 she received the Medal of the Order of St. Louis for her service to the people of St. Francis Xavier parish and the Archdiocese of New Orleans. Her pastimes included gardening, reading, and later in life, spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. For many years she attended daily mass.

She is survived by her children Michael (Carol), David (Sue), Sandra Getz (Charlie), Stanley (Diane), Dan (Berta), James (Victoria), and Jane Marie Marks (Kenny); 13 grandchildren: Rob (Cristin), Stephen, Elizabeth, Austin, Casey, Tyler (Jennifer), Caitlyn, Justin, Laura, Jeremy, Alexandra, Matthew, and Andrew; 5 great grandchildren: Lucy, Stella, Bailey, Kristopher, and Madison; her brother William Patrick Cook (Royce); and many other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her spouse of 61 years Robert Louis Sabrio (April 2, 2009); her parents; and her siblings Mary Cook Gipson, Frances Cook White, Estelle Cook Hire, John Cook, Annie Ruth Cook Allen, and Polly Cook Nyby.

Visitation is scheduled at St. Francis Xavier Church, 444 Metairie Road, Monday, August 25, 2014, from 10 a.m. to 12 noon. A funeral mass will follow at 12 noon with Rev. Msgr. Andrew Taormina and Very Rev. Patrick J. Williams concelebrating. Interment will be at All Saints Mausoleum, 5100 Pontchartrain Blvd. In lieu of flowers, donations to the St. Francis Xavier St. Vincent de Paul Society are respectfully requested.

Dedicated to her family and faith, she will be lovingly remembered as a woman of strength, service, and spirituality.
