Martha Settle “Shorty” Hagan, age 96, passed away peacefully on October 11, 2014. She was born on August 3, 1918 in Maryville, TN. When she was 14 years old in 1932, she and her family moved to Vining’s, GA., a suburb of Atlanta, GA. She attended business school and was the secretary to the President of the Fulwiler and Chapman Company of Atlanta, GA where she met her husband of 44 years, the late Emory J. “Jack” Hagan, Jr. in 1940. They were married June 25, 1948 in Atlanta, GA after 1st Lt Hagan, returned from service with the US Army after World War II. They moved to New Orleans, LA where her husband had opened a branch office of Fulwiler and Chapman. He later opened the E. J. Hagan Company. Martha worked as his secretary for over 25 years. She later worked for Brenan’s Insurance Co. She was a long time resident of Lake Vista in New Orleans and moved to Mandeville in 2005. She was an active member of the Lakeview Baptist Church for over 50 years where she taught Sunday School and served on numerous church boards. She attended St. Timothy UMC church in Mandeville. She is the daughter of the late Raleigh and Carrie Settle and was preceded by her three sisters and two brothers. She is survived by her two children, Brigadier General Emory J. Hagan, III and Mrs.Lynn Otillio (Denny), eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Interment will be at 10:00 am Saturday, October 18, 2014 at Lake Lawn Mausoleum, New Orleans followed by visitation at 1:00 pm and a memorial service at 2:00 pm at
St .Timothy UMC Northshore, 335 Asbury Drive, Mandeville, LA. In lieu of flowers, the family request that donations be made to St. Catherine’s Hospice (LaPlace, LA) or the Charity of your choice.
