Marion Lacoste, a.k.a. Sweets, Marmi, NanNan, Big Marion, peacefully entered her eternal rest on Sunday, December 8, at her home in Metairie. Born to Robert Mavor Caillier and Louise Desforges Callier 95 years ago, she graduated from Incarnate Word grammar school and Eleanor McMain High School. At McMain she excelled in sewing, a talent that served her well in her married life.
Marion met the love of her life, Sidney John Lacoste, when she was 14 years old on the stoop of her home on Apple St. Theirs was a union one can only wish to obtain. After Sid returned from WWII, they married and shared 59 happy years before Sid’s death in 2006. Cheryl, their daughter, passed away in 2021, an event that only Marion’s strong Catholic faith helped her endure. She is survived by her beloved son, Sidney J. Lacoste, Jr., his wife Diana Morel and stepdaughter Dr. Emma Morel-Shiring (Grant), her only grandchild Meredith Lacoste Rongey (Matt) and her great grandchildren, Juliette, Mae, Charlie, and Jack. She dearly loved her nieces and nephew, great nieces and great nephews. Family was everything to Marion and she would happily do anything for them.
Marion was talented and creative. She fashioned beautiful garments for family and herself and even dabbled in painting, coached by her beloved husband. She discovered and mastered creating sought-after woodcrafts as Sid taught her to use a band saw.
She was a devoted member of Metairie Woman’s Club where she served on the Board as Courtesy Chair and Historian for multiple terms. Her smiling face was seen at Philanthropic parties and social events. Marion was also an avid bowler, spending many years with the Shell bowling league with her husband.
Marion’s greatest contribution was her boundless love. She befriended all those who met her, whether it be her hairdresser, the wait staff at her favorite restaurants, or her children’s friends. When you entered her orbit, you were loved. People could not help but love her back. Her devotion to God was limitless. She prayed rosary daily, as a promise to Jesus (JC to Marion), for Sid’s safe return from the war. She was known for her successful petitions to Jesus and those in need would ask to be in her prayers. Her prayer list was extensive, and she voiced every name as she offered prayers for them.
Marion’s life will be celebrated with a Mass of Christian Burial on Wednesday, December 18, 2024, at Lake Lawn Funeral Home, 5100 Pontchartrain Blvd. Visitation will be at 9:00 AM continuing until the start of Mass at 11:00 AM. Marion will be laid to rest with her husband and daughter at 12PM
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to St. Jude’s Research Hospital in Marion’s name. www.stjude.org or 501 St Jude Place, Memphis TN 38105
