Marguerite “Margie” Marie Ferrier Smith departed this earth at home with her children on Thursday to complete her journey to the Lord after a long illness. A lifelong native of New Orleans and Mandeville, she was the beloved wife of 28 years to Leonard B. Smith, who pre-deceased her on September 7, 2013. Margie was mother to James (Jim) Ferrier Rivas, Mary Elizabeth (Betsy) Rivas, Deborah Ann (Debbie) Rivas and Emanuel Pierre (Pete) Rivas, IV (Pre-deceased in 1980); grandmother to Meredith Rivas, Anne Rivas, Arden Duhon, Wesley Mobley, Elizabeth Mobley; sister to Mignon Parker, Leon Ferrier (Carolina), Claire Stahl (Harry), Marcelle Ferrier, Fr. Francis Ferrier, S.J. (deceased), Minette Verhunse (deceased), and Eduard Ferrier(Cathy) (deceased); and is survived by 14 nephews and nieces. Margie was step mother to Susan Smith Parks (Ronald), Richard Smith (Martha) and David Smith. Grandmother to Michelle Toms (Jeremy), Bryan Parks (Nicole), Casey Smith (Magan), Nicole Rodriguez (Jeremy), Sadi Mae and Emery Smith, Colin smith and Katy Sotolongo (Samuel). Great Grandmother to Michelle and Jeremy Toms quadruplets; Madie, Zack, Hunter, and Parker Toms. Margie attended the Academy of the Sacred Heart from Pre-K to 12th and received a teaching degree from Tulane University. During her younger years she enjoyed sports, photography, sewing, and Bridge. She was active in various organizations including DAR, Northlake Newcomers, and Mandeville Women’s Republican Club. She was a past Board Member of Northlake Newcomers; volunteer for the Heart and Lung Friends, and volunteer for the New Orleans Museum of Art. Margie was a charter member of Mary Queen of Peace Church in Mandeville, and was active with CCD, various ministries, and a Eucharistic Minister. Her greatest passion was singing in the Mary Queen of Peace Choir for 12 years. Her greatest joys were her children, grandchildren, and friends. She loved to entertain and travel and host the annual family gathering at the beach. In lieu of flowers please send contributions to the Mary Queen of Peace Choir – 1501 W. Causeway Approach, Mandeville, LA 70471 from 11:00 AM until 12:30 PM. A funeral mass will begin at 12:30 PM.
