Manoj Kumar Biswas, M.D., born June 2, 1942, passed peacefully from this life with his daughter by his side on Sunday, March 16, 2025. Dr. Biswas is survived by the mother of his children, Minati Das Biswas, M.D.; his daughter, Raakhee Kumar and son-in-law, Dr. Roy Kumar and his granddaughters, Mirabela and Sharmila Kumar; and his son, Sanjay Biswas and his wife, Connie Disbrow, and grandchildren, Lillie and Allen Biswas.
Dr. Biswas had a remarkable and extraordinary life in his 82 years. Born in Kolkata, India, he was the only child (of 5 siblings) to pursue a medical degree. That degree opened doors to living and working in the U.K. and eventually, certification by the Royal College of Obstetrics and Gynecology in Maternal Fetal Medicine. He was a brilliant clinician, delivering over 3000 babies in his career, and an esteemed medical professor at Tulane University Medical Center and School in New Orleans, Louisiana. There, he won the teaching award year after year, and to this day, medical students, residents, and fellows reminisce about the impact he had in shaping their practice of medicine.
But beyond Dr. Biswas’s many decorated, professional achievements and contributions, Dr. Biswas had a vibrant and full life -- filled with singing, poetry-writing, world-cruising, storytelling, picture-taking, and antic-playing. He also had great love for his grandchildren, who nurtured his youthful spirit and gave him much pride, and his dogs, who gave him constant companionship.
Dr. Biswas’s funeral service and cremation was held at the Clayton Funeral Home & Crematorium in Houston, Texas on Saturday, March 22, 2025. Additionally, a Memorial Service and Celebration of Life will be held in New Orleans, Louisiana at Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home at 11 am on Sunday, March 30, 2025. To honor Dr. Biswas, we ask that donations be made in his memory to the ASPCA; Missionaries of Charity in Kolkata (Mother Teresa’s charity); or Khan Academy.
