Magna Garcia Altamirano died on December 24, 2022 in Auburn, Alabama. She was born in London, England on October 18, 1924 to Jacob Garcia and Eugenia Diaz de Guevara de Garcia. She was raised in Iquitos, Peru.
Magna is survived by her loving husband of 66 years, Roberto Guzman Altamirano; her two devoted daughters, Isabel M. Altamirano and Magna Cayll; and her esteemed son-in-law, David R. Cayll. She is also survived by her two wonderful grandchildren, David Cayll and Caroline Cayll.
After high school, she graduated from a local business school. She worked as a secretary at the Peruvian Ministry of the Navy in Callao and Lima, Peru. On November 24, 1956, she married Roberto Guzman Altamirano and later moved to New Orleans, Louisiana. She was a parishioner of St. Alphonsus Parish, and later in the 1990’s, she was a parishioner of St. Stephen’s Catholic Church. She enjoyed volunteering in her daughters’ schools. She was an avid gardener and prepared delicious meals with influences from Peru, Honduras, Cuba, and her much enjoyed New Orleans cuisine. Her favorite hobbies were hand embroidery, cross-stitching, knitting, sewing, and reading history books, especially biographies about Napoleon. She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren. She was known by her family for her strength and her sense of humor. In her later years, she lived in Tyler, Texas; Atlanta, Georgia; and Auburn, Alabama.
The family would like to thank Enhabit Home Health and Hospice for the care they provided towards the end of her dementia.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend the visitation at Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home, 5100 Pontchartrain Blvd. in New Orleans, on Tuesday, January 3, 2023 from 10:00AM until 12:00PM. A graveside service will immediately follow the visitation at Lake Lawn Park Mausoleum.
