Gilberti, Louis Peter “PoPo”, age 88, died peacefully at home on Tuesday, July 13, 2021, surrounded by his loving family. Commonly known as Louie, he was born on 8/25/1932 in Summit Hill, PA to Alice Tonon Gilberti and Louis J. Gilberti. He was a graduate of Jesuit High School (1950), Loyola University (1954), and Loyola Dental School (1958). Following his graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy, earning the rank of lieutenant, and practiced general dentistry for 2 years while stationed in Imperial Beach, CA. Upon returning to New Orleans, he established a private dental practice that serviced many adoring patients for 50 years. He would later retire from his practice at age 73 (2006). He was an active member of the Louisiana Dental Association and well acknowledged among the profession. His other involvements include a year as President of Lakeside Country Club and duke of the Knights of Anubis. Louie and his wife Rose were one of the founding families of St. Angela Merici Parish. He was self-proclaimed “social chairman” of many themed weekend parties at Lakeside Country Club and their home on Beverly Garden Drive (he sure knew how to throw a party!)
Louie’s talents were many; known for his love for cooking and renowned meatballs and gravy (which he learned from his Sicilian wife…the extra oregano is key). The Gilberti family celebrated “PoPo” and their love for food at the annual Cucuzza Fest, a tradition that Louie held near to his heart. He enjoyed spending time in the garden but had true passion for building design and construction. With the help of his six sons, he built the “Rancha La Mancha,” a weekend home in Goodbee LA which would provide numerous fond memories to family and friends. Over the years, Rose and Louie traveled the world together; their favorite adventures included trips to Italy and Russia.
He is preceded in death by his son, Paul (Lisa). Survived by his loving wife and college sweetheart (of 68 years), Rose Spadaro Gilberti; five sons- Philip (Patricia), Louis Jr. (Janie), Peter (Julie), Marc (Gena), and Michelangelo (Carolyn); and sister Charlotte Gilberti D’Angelo. He has 15 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren (with one on the way). Louie considered himself the wealthiest man due to the love and devotion of his entire family.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, July 17, 2021 at Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home at 5100 Pontchartrain Blvd., New Orleans, LA 70124. Visitation begins at 10:00 AM followed by a Catholic mass at 12:00 PM.
