Lela Mae Skanes (Auntee) was born January 19, 1934 to the late Ivory Hardges and the late Jimmie C. Edwards in Leinna, Mississippi. She later moved to New Orleans, LA where she attended school. She was baptized at an early age. Later in her life, she met the late Joseph Skanes, to whom she was wed. She became a member of New Home F.G.C., until she moved her membership to A.C.R.O.P. Ministries of Mandeville, LA under the leadership of Apostle Sterling and Deborah Winston, where she enjoyed bible study. Lela “Auntee Lena” was known for her tasty food, hosting parties, and holiday gatherings for her family and friends. She was the life of the party even when she gave the party. She loved to cook and would feed anyone, including the homeless. She didn’t like to see anyone hungry or destitute. She was a kind-hearted selfless person, and look for anything in return but love. She also enjoyed dancing, and various genres of music. She was a part of Harmony Home Senior Center, where she met numerous people and enjoyed going every day. She is preceded in death by her brothers, Gilbert Edwards and Tommie Edwards; sisters, Alise Benjamin and Deborah Edwards. She is survived by her sisters, Ernestine Robinson, Charlotte Hudson, Dorethea Edwards, Maxine Dennis; her niece whom she raised from the age of 9 ½ months following the death of her mother, Kimberlin Edwards. She is also survived by a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, family, and friends. The family would like to give their special thanks to Harmony House, Magnolia Grocery, and Tulane Medical Center for their care. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, January 14, 2023 at Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home, 5100 Pontchartrain Blvd New Orleans, LA 70124. The service will begin at 12:00PM until 2:00PM.
