Laura Noto Harper passed away peacefully on Sunday, April 11, 2021 surrounded by her loving family. She was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Gerald J. Harper, her father Carlo J. Noto, mother Eleanor M. Noto, father-in-law Irving J. Harper, mother-in-law Delphine Brignac Harper, brother-in-law Ronald J. Harper, sister-in-law Beverly Generes Harper, and brother-in-law Roy Hammack. She is survived by her children, Darren (Jessica), Stephanie, Colleen Woodman (Howard) and Christopher. Laura was the devoted grandmother to her grandchildren, Jeanne, William, Jaime Harper, and Emily Woodman. She is also survived by her sister Ollie Noto Hammack and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was born 83 years ago in Tickfaw, Louisiana. Laura graduated from Alcée Fortier High School in New Orleans and attended Southeastern Louisiana University in Hammond. She was a proud member of Beta Sigma Phi sorority and the Who Dat Nation where she cheered on the Black and Gold. Laura kept the legend of Mother Jones alive in her fight for the rights of school support personnel. Every day she lived by Mother Jones’ battle cry, “pray for the dead and fight like hell for the living.” In 2014 Laura retired from the Jefferson Federation of Teachers where she served as the Jefferson Federation of Teachers PSRP Representative, Chair of the Louisiana Federation of Teachers PSRP Committee, and member of the American Federation of Teachers Committee.
Family and friends are invited to attend the visitation on Tuesday, April 20, 2021 at Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home, 5100 Pontchartrain Blvd., New Orleans from 11am - 1pm, with Funeral Mass beginning at 1pm, interment will follow in All Saints Mausoleum.
In lieu of flowers donations to St. Jude Children's hospital will be appreciated.
