Born on November 18, 1940, Ladd graduated from East Jefferson High School in 1958 and received a Bachelor of Architecture at the College of Engineering, Louisiana State University and the Henry Adams Fund Award for Scholarship in 1964. He served honorably in the US Coast Guard for several years before founding his architectural and engineering firm Ehlinger and Associates, PC in 1968. He enjoyed an illustrious Architectural career spanning more than 50 years. Ladd also hosted architectural continuing education courses for the Professional Focus Group from 1999 to 2017, which was founded to promote technical excellence in architecture.
Ladd designed, renovated and provided forensic architectural expertise for schools, heliports, homes, military bases, offices, fire stations, as well as saving and restoring many landmarks throughout the years and the greater Southern United States. Ladd was an avid traveler and photographer, circling the globe many times over, collecting photographs and drawings of notable world architecture, from Costa Rica to Cairo, Egypt. From 1988 until this spring 2021 he sent out a quarterly newsletter with a personally produced etching of a notable building from these travels.
His architectural firm, Ehlinger & Associates, PC, founded in 1966, will continue under the leadership of his son Perrin Ehlinger, AIA.
Ladd was preceded in death by his parents, Jacques Pillot Ehlinger and Juanita Perrin Ehlinger; his siblings Jack, Jill, Rancier, Quentin, and Jeffrey Ehlinger. He is survived by his loving wife of 54 years Dolcie-Anna Suggs; his three sons Ladd Paul Ehlinger, Jr. (wife Karen Guelfo), Robert Perrin Ehlinger (wife Catherine Cooper), Early David Ehlinger (wife Jeania Jarreau); and his grandchildren Dr. Megan Ehlinger Boothe (husband Dr. Paul Boothe), Corin Ashley Ehlinger, Susannah Grace Ehlinger, and Early David Ehlinger Jr..
A memorial will be held at Lake Lawn Funeral Home at 5100 Pontchartrain Blvd on Monday June 7, 2021 from 1:00pm until 2:00pm with a service beginning at 2:00pm. Anyone unable to attend in person may join a Zoom meeting instead, with links provided at http://ehlinger.com.
Interment will be Tuesday, June 8, 2021 at 9am at St. Vincent de Paul Cemetery #1, 1925 Soniat St, New Orleans, LA 70115.
