Joycelyn “Joyce” Theresa Cuny passed away on May 13, 2024 at the age of 87. She was born in New Orleans, Louisiana, on March 9, 1937. Joycelyn loved to dance. She and Sonny would go to dances with costume/dance competition. They would often win which allowed them to stock their first bar. She worked at Louisiana Power and Light for 7 years until she had her son, Brian. She became a stay at home mom and later had her daughter, Debra. She would eventually become a grandmother with 4 grandchildren. She loved to keep an immaculate home and beautiful garden. With the help of Brian, she won Garden of Month Club. Joycelyn traveled extensively in the US, Canada and Europe. Joyce also loved to stay at The Royal Sonesta every year for the French Quarter Festival. She would bake the brownies for all the family gatherings. At her summer house, Joyce invited people over to celebrate July 4th. Attendees would enjoy swimming, boat rides around the lake and the beautiful fireworks display over the lake that were watched from the front yard.
She is survived by her children, Debra Theresa Cuny (Kermit) and Brian Alexis Cuny (Mary); sister, Theresa Chagnard Harvey (Robert); brother, Norwel Walter Chagnard; grandchildren, Alexis Alexander Cuny (Brie), and Ashley Cuny O’Connor (Matt); and great grandchildren, Aiden Alexander Cuny, Archer “Archie” Alexander Cuny, Charlotte Louise O’Connor, and Eleanor Louise O’Connor.
Joyce was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 63 years, Ernest George “Ernie” “Sonny” Cuny; parents, Arthur Walter and Theresa Gladys Holmes Chagnard; and her twin sister who sadly passed away at birth, Jacqueline Chagnard.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the staffs of Colonial Oaks Living Center and Hospice Associates for their care.
