John Maurice Sable left this earth peacefully Sunday, November 4, 2018. He is survived by his wife of 29 years, Paulette Brown Sable; twin children John David Sable (Aimee) and Sheri Sable-Campbell (John); a step-son, David Brown; and six grandchildren, Anna Sable Campbell, Jack Campbell, Grant Campbell, Ethan Sable, Liam Sable and Emma Sable. He is also survived by many loved cousins, nieces, nephews and family members, in addition to his children’s mother, Susan Dugan Fristoe. John was preceded in death by his father, John Leslie Sable; mother, Elma Kemp Sable; and sister, Vera Sable Berndt.
John was born in New Orleans November 16, 1945 and grew up in Mid-City. His talent and love for music was evident early in his childhood and remained a constant throughout his lifetime. When he arrived an enthusiastic freshman at Louisiana State University, he was also a proud new trumpet player in the Golden Band from Tiger Land. The band was given a new arrangement to perform before the start of the game...something to inspire fans, something that we now know simply as “Pregame”. When John marched onto the field in Death Valley to perform that arrangement with the Tiger Band for the very first time, he had no idea he would be playing four notes that would go down in LSU musical history - Daaaa Daa Daaaa Da! Throughout John’s life, the sound of those four notes and his proud, fond memories of performing them would forever give him chills and bring tears to his eyes. He loved to share that musical experience and story with others any chance he could.
John graduated from the New Orleans Police Academy and proudly served for years as a homicide detective with the New Orleans Police Department. After moving his family to the North Shore, Johnny served as the Chief of Police for the Town of Abita Springs. He also had a successful career working in the hotel industry where he met his beloved Paulette, and then later in life at Valero Refinery, a job he thoroughly enjoyed.
But John’s true enjoyment in life was bringing smiles and happiness to those he cared about. He loved a celebration and went out of his way to make any event with his family just that! Everything he did he gave 110% and loved to make any occasion “over the top”! Something as simple as delivering the first king cake of the season to his grandkids on Twelfth Night would be carried out with the fanfare of Mardi Gras music wailing from his truck upon arrival, John dressed head-to-toe in purple, green and gold, followed by a second line through the house, beads and throws flying along the way. John’s laughter was contagious! Once he started giggling he couldn't stop and would often laugh until he cried, right along with anyone lucky enough to be around him. John’s love of life was immense. He lived and loved with everything he had. He will missed by everyone who knew and loved him.
