John F. “Jack’ Young, Sr. went to his eternal rest on May 15, 2023. Jack was a native of Syracuse, N.Y. and moved to New Orleans, La. from Binghamton, N.Y. in 1951. He graduated from Jesuit High School in 1952 and from Loyola University in 1956. While at Loyola University, he served in the ROTC and was a member of SAK Fraternity.
Jack served his country in the U.S. Army as an active duty officer from 1957-1959 and remained in the U.S. Army Reserves until 1962 at which time he received an Honorable Discharge with the rank of Captain. His last tour of duty was at Fort Polk, La., where he served as Post Information Officer.
Upon his Honorable Discharge from the U.S. Army, he entered the insurance profession and specialized in Brown Water Marine Insurance. He was well respected by both his colleagues and competitors for his integrity, knowledge and expertise and testified as an expert witness on insurance matters in both State and Federal courts. He remained active in the insurance industry until his 88th birthday.
Jack was also active in his community and in civic and religious matters. He served as President of the Better Government Group. He was the founder and first President of Riverside Country Club. He served as a Lector and Eucharistic Minister at St. Louis Cathedral for 38 years and more recently at St. Angela Merici. He was a recipient of the Order of St. Louis Medallion, which is awarded to those laypersons who have contributed their time, talents and treasures to the Catholic Church.
Jack also served on the Boards of The Salvation Army and Goodwill Industries for several years. He was a member of Metairie Country Club, the Krewe of Bacchus and Pass Christian Yacht Club.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Laiche Young, his six children , John F. Young, Jr., Mary Young Gattas (George), Jeffrey Young, Christopher Young, Keiffer Young and Judith Young Pontin, 14 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren, as well his younger brother, Robert Young. He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Grace Young, his sister, Jean Vadnais Young, and his son, Gerard Young.
Services will be held at Lakelawn -Metairie on Friday, June 2, 2023. Visitation is from 9:30 am to 11:00 am with a Catholic Mass to immediately follow at Lakelawn- Metairie.
In lieu of flowers, donations to The Salvation Army, Goodwill Industries or The Alzheimer’s Association would be most appreciated.
