Jan Fleming Christiansen passed away in his home in Abita Springs on May 28, 2024, at the age of 70. He was born in New Orleans on April 7, 1954, and had fond memories of growing up in Uptown and Gentilly with his brother, sister, and cousin. He attended John F. Kennedy High School and graduated from the University of New Orleans. Growing up, Jan always wanted to be a police officer, to give back to his community and help people. He followed his dream, graduating from the New Orleans Police Academy in the 74th class of 1978. He served as a police officer and detective in the 7th District for more than 31 years and retired on January 10, 2010. While at the NOPD, he met and married a fellow police officer, Deborah Gary, and they enjoyed 42 years of marriage together.
Jan was proud of his Danish heritage; an avid Saints, LSU, and Dodgers fan; and enjoyed attending Saints home games with his family. He had many longtime friends from the NOPD and cherished their friendships. Jan and his wife were devoted Catholics and attended St. Jane de Chantal in Abita Springs. He loved spending his free time with their sweet dogs.
Jan is preceded in death by his parents, Eilif and Margaret Christiansen, and his sister, Lise. He is survived by his wife, Deborah; his "son," Cornelio Pacheco; his brother, Bent, and wife, Cookie; his nephews, Jeff, Paul and Sean; his cousin, Henrik Pontoppidan and wife, Pam; and his many great nieces and nephews.
Services will be held at Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home on Friday, May 31, with visitation from noon to 2 p.m. followed by a funeral mass by family priests Father Oliver Smalls and Father Sylvester Adoga.
