James F. Whelan passed away on Good Friday, March 25, 2016, at the age of 76. Beloved husband of Darleen Hindermann Whelan. Father of Nicole Whelan Viosca and husband Jeff, James F. Whelan, Jr. (Jim) and wife Ginger, Kimberly Knouse and Kelly Knouse. Grandfather of Gabrielle, Jeffrey, Isabella and Andrew Viosca, Riley Whelan and Joseph and Cameron Colletti. Brother of A. J. Whelan (Bonnie) and Joann Cusimano (Jake).
Also survived by aunt, Bernice Kettenring and many nieces, nephews and treasured friends.
Preceded in death by his parents, Andrew Whelan and Bernice Kettenring Whelan, and first wife, Barbara Saltarrelli Whelan.
Jimmy was born in New Orleans and was a lifelong resident of Metairie for nearly 50 years. He was a graduate of Jesuit High School and worked in the food industry for many years as the owner of Imperial Meats, Inc. and Food Brokers, Inc.
Jimmy was a parishioner of St. Benilde and St. Ann Catholic Church and a familiar face at St. Clement of Rome’s daily Mass and Adoration Chapel.
The family would like to extend their thanks to the doctors and nurses of East Jefferson Hospital, especially Dr. Marcus Black, Dr. Paul Monsour, Dr. Roland Bourgeois and Dr. Steven Scalco along with the compassionate staff of nurses at the Yenni Fusion Center; and Brenda, Scott, Kelly and Connie of Family HomeCare.
Relatives and friends of the family are invited to attend a Funeral Mass celebrated by Father Robert Cooper, on Friday, April 1, 2016 at 12:00 p.m. at Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home, 5100 Pontchartrain Blvd, New Orleans, LA 70124. Interment will follow in All Saints Mausoleum. Visitation will take place prior to the service beginning at 10:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, www.lls.org.
