George “GG” Griswold II, age 81, died on November 26, 2021, in New Orleans, Louisiana. The son of Nina and Jack Griswold, GG was born in Morristown, New Jersey, but arrived in New Orleans as an infant and would reside there for the rest of his life.
Throughout his life, GG exuded a quiet confidence and a mischievous nature. He sampled many New Orleans schools before attending and graduating from Christ School in Arden, North Carolina. He then went on to attend The University of Virginia where he was an avid member of St. Anthony Hall fraternity which led to a two-year stint in the U. S. Navy. Following his military service, he returned and graduated from The University of Virginia as a newlywed.
GG began his professional career with Whitney National Bank in 1965, but soon joined Waters, Parkerson & Company where he would spend the balance of his career before retiring as Chairman of the Board in 2015.
GG was a tennis player and member of the New Orleans Lawn Tennis Club, a sailor, particularly a catboat enthusiast. Both activities were usually followed by libations with friends. GG spent many summers sailing and fishing off Martha’s Vineyard. He was on occasion a talented woodworker although he produced more sawdust than museum pieces.
GG served on several boards, both local and national, and was a member of numerous New Orleans
social and carnival organizations where he never failed to thrill revelers with his dance moves. Never one to hog the limelight, nevertheless his keen wit and self-deprecating humor delighted many.
GG is survived by his wife of 57 years, Mary Madison Dickson Griswold, his son, Dickson, his daughters, Catherine (Gasque) and Nina (Fitch) as well as six grandchildren - all of whom he has taught to play gin rummy and stir the pot. He is preceded in death by his parents, Nina and Jack, his sister, Wendy Griswold Reily, and is survived by many wonderful nieces and nephews, loving in-laws, outlaws, cousins, family and friends.
A service will be held at Trinity Episcopal Church, 1329 Jackson Avenue, New Orleans, LA 70130 on Saturday, December 11 at three o’clock, with a reception following in Bishop Polk Hall.
