Gene Jeffrey Hazel December 29, 1956 – June 23, 2017 Gene Jeffrey Hazel, a native of Monroe, Louisiana, died Friday at The University Medical Center in New Orleans of complications from surgery and following a long illness. He was 60. The second son of Miram Mann (Sunshine) Hazel and the late Gene Carlos Hazel, Jeff is survived by an older sister, Louise Hazel Jenkins (Charles), and three brothers: Stephen, Mark (Fran), and Chris (Karen); and nieces and nephews: Amy, Shelby, Edward (Beth), Benjamin, Taulbee (Melissa), Sims, Tapp, Maddox, Sydney and Brik; and one great niece, Claire Minerva. Jeff was a scholar of Classical Studies, majoring in the subject at Louisiana State University where he graduated in 1979. He completed early schooling in West Monroe and completed high school at Holy Cross in New Orleans. Jeff was a devoted reader and music lover. He enjoyed being outdoors and taking long walks. His attention to detail and love of sharing life was evident in his hand-written letters and recipes to his family and friends. He is survived also by good Louisiana friends, Earl Dautrieve, Peggy Langenbeck, Joyce Rice and Tom Tippin, whose company he enjoyed during the last decades of his life. A memorial service will be held on July 1, 2017 at St. Anna’s Episcopal Church at 11:00 a.m. in New Orleans. Visitation will begin at 10:00 a.m..
