Gary Arthur Lloyd, professor emeritus of Tulane University, died on July 26, 2023. He was 88. Dr. Lloyd graduated from Northwestern University and earned his Master of Social Work and Ph.D. degrees from Tulane University, where he taught in the School of Social work for thirty years. He held adjunct teaching positions at Tulane School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine, LSU School of Medicine Department of Psychiatry, University of Southern Mississippi, and Goddard College, and visiting professorships at University of Hawaii, Glasgow University (Scotland), and San Jose State University. He was Dean of the University of Houston Graduate School of Social Work, and Executive Director of the national Council on Social Work Education. He was named national and Louisiana social worker of the year by the National Association of Social Workers, School of Social Work Outstanding Alumnus and received the excellence in teaching award. Dr. Lloyd was the author of three monographs and more than fifty articles and encyclopedia entries on social work practice, social policy, and preventive approaches to HIV/AIDS. For four years he served as advisor and consultant to the World Health Organization Global Programme on Aids in Anglophone Africa, India, and Sri Lanka. He was a board member of many civic and professional organizations including the New Orleans Urban League, Project Lazarus, Episcopal Community Services, Vieux Carre Property Owners, and the Louisiana Commission on HIV and AIDS. Following his retirement, he was an active volunteer with the Friends of the Cabildo. He was a member of St. Anna's Episcopal Church. He is survived by his brother P.R. Balgopal of Urbana IL and his companion, Michael J. Duffy. Memorial donations may be sent to the St. Anna's Episcopal Church, 1313 Esplanade Avenue New Orleans, LA 70116.
