Elizabeth Stinchcum Rogers

Elizabeth “Libby” Stinchcum Rogers, born March 19, 1932, passed peacefully on March 4, 2023. She was born in Baltimore, Maryland, to William and Catherine Stinchcum. Elizabeth was the only daughter in a family that included two younger brothers, Robert and Douglas. Her father, William, was a civil engineer for the US Navy which led them to settle in New Orleans in the early 1950’s.

Libby attended Long Island Agricultural and Technology Institute where she graduated in dental hygiene in 1949. She was one of the first six dental hygienists in New Orleans and specialized in children’s dentistry. Later, Libby attended Louisiana State University (Geaux Tigers!) in Baton Rouge, graduating with a bachelor of science in education. A chance restaurant outing with girlfriends in Tiger Town resulted in her meeting James “Jim” Rogers, a man nearing the end of his pre-medical training. Jim and Libby married on July 28, 1955, and they began their life together. Jim served in the Navy’s Medical Corps while completing his medical residency. It was at the naval base in Pensacola, Florida, that Libby gave birth to their son, William, in 1956. After Jim left the Navy, the family moved to New Orleans, Louisiana, calling New Orleans home for the next 60-plus years. Jim was a practicing physician, and Libby was active on several boards, including the Women’s Auxiliary of the Orleans Parish Medical Society, and garden and book clubs alike. Libby was instrumental in designing the Doctors’ Grove, a meditative respite of cypress trees for New Orleans physicians. In 1978, she received the “Great Lady” award for her service to the hospital, its blood-donor program, and practicing physicians.

Libby had many friends, and she enjoyed playing golf and socializing at Metairie Country Club. She also enjoyed traveling, and she went on trips all over the world with her family and friends. One of her favorite destinations was the family’s hunting camp on Davis Island in the Mississippi River. It is a remote, wild place accessible only by boat, but it was a place of great joy for her. She greatly enjoyed fishing. There are few finer meals than fresh-caught fish, especially when she did the catching.

Jim and Libby moved to Austin, Texas, in 2021 to enjoy being closer to their family. They were overjoyed to welcome their great-granddaughter, Piper Rogers, to the world the very next year. Libby loved being a mother, a grandmother, and a great-grandmother, doting on her family. Seeing them loved, well-cared for, and happy was all she desired in life.

Libby was preceded in death by her parents, William and Catherine Stinchcum. Her beloved husband, James Rogers, of New Orleans, Louisiana passed within a week of her. She is survived by; her son and daughter-in-law William and Lydia Rogers of Austin, Texas; her grandson and granddaughter-in-law, James and Nicole Rogers of Georgetown, Texas, and her great-granddaughter, Piper Rogers, also of Georgetown, Texas. Additionally, she is survived by her brother Doug (Cheryl) Stinchcum, her brother Robert (Judy) Stinchcum, a multitude of nieces and nephews, and by many good friends who will miss seeing her at their dinner tables, cocktail parties, as one of their golf foursome, and at the hunting camp.

The funeral and visitation for Libby and James will be held at Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home on Thursday, March 23, 2023. Visitation begins at 11:00 a.m. until mass time at 12:00 p.m. Interment will follow at All Saints Mausoleum. In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations to the non-profit or charity of your choice.
