Edward Harold “Sandy” Saer, Jr. died on June 16, 2015, in Covington, Louisiana. Born in Dallas, Texas on April 28, 1920, he was the son of E. H. Saer and Mary Louise Cowser. The Saer family moved to New Orleans when Sandy was a child. After graduating from Jesuit High School in 1937 he attended Canterbury Academy for one year. Sandy then enrolled in Georgetown University where he graduated in 1942, also receiving at that time a commission as an officer in the United States Army. After serving in Europe during WWII, Sandy returned to New Orleans and enrolled at Tulane University Law School.
Sandy served as an editor of the Law Review and received his law degree in 1948, the year he was called to the bar. After working for 2 years at an oil company, Sandy joined the law firm now known as Chaffe McCall. During his long and distinguished career at the firm he concentrated on oil and gas law. He also served on the firm’s management committee and as Managing Partner.
Sandy served for many years as a member of Georgetown University’s Board of Regents. In 1987 the University honored him with the John Carroll Award in recognition of his achievements exemplifying the ideals of the University and its founder, Archbishop John Carroll. He was a member of the Plimsoll Club, the Boston Club, the New Orleans Country Club, Tchefuncta Country Club, Beaumaris Yacht and Golf Club, Linville Ridge Country Club and several other social organizations. He enjoyed golf and walking, and traveled frequently after retirement. He especially enjoyed summers with his large family on Crusoe Island, Lake Muskoka, Canada and also at Linville Ridge, NC.
Sandy Saer was the consummate gentleman throughout his long, active and productive life. He embodied the virtues of honesty, civility, and trustworthiness in both his personal and professional life. He was generous and kind to all, and tried to avoid giving advice to his adult children, although with somewhat less than complete success. Sandy’s quick smile, selfless attitude and quiet good humor endeared him to many throughout his life, especially his caregivers during his medical travails.
Sandy is survived by his wife Felice Maurer Saer, brother Dr. J. Kenneth Saer of New Orleans, sister Patricia Brown of Little Rock, AR, children Dr. Ted Saer (Wendy) of Little Rock, AR, Helen Saer Calvert (Matt) of Atlanta, GA, Mary Louise Saer of Covington, LA, John B.
