Edmund Norman Benes passed away Thursday, December 2, 2021. He was born in 1932 to Renata Pizzeck Benes and Edward Benes. Ed grew up in New Orleans and graduated from Alcee Fortier High school. He was a proud Boy Scout who spent many summers as a participant and counselor at Camp Salmen. Ed was fleet appointed to the United States Naval Academy in 1953. He graduated from Louisiana State University with a Bachelor of Science in Bacteriology. In 1956 he married his wife of 53 years Florence Mehle. Together they shared 2 daughters Kerri Benes Erwin and Erin Benes Eustis (Pierre), 3 grandchildren, Lindsey, Garrett, and Seth and 1 great grandson, Jackson. Ed was very talented and respected in his field. During his career as a Research Associate, he partnered with physicians on treatments for cancer that advanced the wellbeing of many. His legacy in cancer tissue culture studies will benefit future patients as well. He took pride in his contributions to the many research articles that were published, as well as his participation in an experiment included on the Space shuttle Columbia / Neurolab. He will be remembered for his love and devotion to his family, his love of the outdoors, (he picked up a lot of rocks), his garden, his love for his dogs, his stubborn nature and sarcastic sense of humor. He is also survived by his sister Norma Benes Pack of Bend, Oregon his nieces, nephews and cousins.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend the memorial gathering at Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home, 5100 Pontchartrain Blvd in New Orleans, Louisiana, on Thursday, December 9, 2021 from 2 – 4 PM.
