

David Luther Forly died at the age of 73, after a long battle with Alzheimer’s. A native New Orleanian, he attended high school at Rugby Military Academy and was a member of the Civil Air Patrol. He graduated from Tulane and Loyola University.
David retired from VFP Fire Systems. He served as assistant scoutmaster with the Boy Scouts Troop 35 and was a vigil member of the Order of the Arrow. He was a parishioner of Basilica of St. Stephen and was a member of the Knights of Columbus. He was an outdoorsman who enjoyed sailing, scouting, camping, and motorcycle riding. More than anything, he enjoyed being a Grandpa.
He is survived by his beloved of 45 years, Dorothy Lynch Forly; his sons, David S. (Danielle) and Jim Nelson (Ashley); his brothers, Melvin Fortenberry (Mary); nephews Matthew Fortenberry and Mitchell Fortenberry; sister-in-law Sean Fortenberry; niece Carrie Fortenberry; his grandchildren, Sawyer, Camille, and Liam; and his faithful dog, Lafitte. He has extended Fortenberry family of Mt. Herman. David is preceded in death by: his parents, Harvey and Mary Fortenberry; his brother, “C.J.” Cary J. Fortenberry; his grandmother, Ruth Mims Stevens.
In lieu of flowers, memorial masses would be appreciated. The family suggests donations to Alzheimer’s Association at act.alz.org/donate or to your favorite charity in David’s memory.
The family would like to give their special thanks to the devoted staff of Traditions Health Hospice Care, particularly to Drew, Aricia, and Karen. The family would also like to acknowledge the care and devotion of Phalon Cornist and Taylor.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a funeral mass held at Basilica of St. Stephen, 1025 Napoleon Ave, New Orleans, LA on Wednesday, January 18, 2023 at 11:00am. A visitation at church will begin at 9:00am until mass begins. Interment will be private at a later date. Celebration of Life will follow the mass.
