Charles Walter Martin, age 80, passed away on Friday, July 8, 2011. A native and lifelong resident of New Orleans, he was a retired school teacher with the New Orleans Public School System. He is survived by his sister Joycelyn M. Frey, brother Michael J. Martin and sister-in-law Vita R. Martin, sister Carol M. Adams and brother-in-law James J. Adams, , as well as numerous nephews, nieces, great-nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents: Michael Thomas and Catherine Veronica Martin as well as his brothers: Thomas P., James E., and Richard B. Martin. Charlie was a graduate of Holy Cross High School in 1949. He received a B.S. from Mississippi Southern College, where he served on the school newspaper and was involved in drama department productions. Additionally, he was active in theatre productions locally. He also was a member of Phi Kappa Tau social fraternity. He served honorably in both the U.S. Marine Corp and U.S. Navy. He enjoyed travelling having vacationed throughout the United States and Europe.
He taught at Colton Jr. High and Francis T. Nichols Senior High School until his retirement in 1987. He was a longtime resident of the French Quarter. His Favorite Holiday was Mardi Gras and he was well known for his Mardi Gras Day Parties at his French Quarter home.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Funeral Mass at Jacob SCHOEN& SON FUNERAL HOME, 3827 Canal Street, New Orleans, La. on Tuesday, July 12, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. Visitation will begin at 9:00 a.m. until service time. Internment will follow at Greenwood Cemetery.
