Sister Catherine Junkin, D. C. entered eternal life April 17, 2013 at Our Lady of Wisdom Health Center, New Orleans, Louisiana. Born December 15, 1928, in Natchez, Mississippi, to her parents William J. Junkin, Sr., and Bertha Zurhellen Junkin, she was baptized Margaret Zurhellen Junkin.
Sister Catherine was preceded in death by her two brothers-William, Jr., (Alma) and George (Ninette) by her twin sister Edwina and Edwina’s husband Gene Blanchard, by her stepmother Genevieve Junkin and stepbrother Richard Smith (Virginia). She is survived by two sisters-Sister Mary Junkin, D.C. and Marty Seibert (J.W.), her sister-in-law, Alma and by numerous nieces and nephews.
Sister Catherine entered the Daughters of Charity in 1946. All her 66 years in ministry were devoted to Catholic elementary education. She held a B.S. in Education, a Masters degree in Math Education and post graduate work in Educational Administration. Her early teaching assignments took her to Long Beach, MS; Dallas, TX; Price, UT; Carson City, NV; and St. Louis, MO. Since 1964, Sister Catherine has served in Louisiana. In Donaldsonville at Ascension Catholic Middle School she was Assistant Principal 69-70 and a teacher 77-79. All of her educational work was carried out in New Orleans at the following schools and roles; St. Joseph School 70-75 (Principal); Blessed Sacrament School 75-76 (Teacher); St. Stephen School 76-77 (Teacher); Corpus Christi School 79-87 (Principal); St. Philip the Apostle School 87-93 (Principal); St. David School 93-97 (Assistant Principal/Math Teacher); Marian Catholic Middle School 97-98 and 2001 (Math Teacher) ; St. Mary of the Angels School 98-2000 (Principal); St. Philip the Apostle School 01-05 (Math Tutor and GED); St. Mary’s Academy 02-05 (Tutor); MAX School Jan 06-June 06 (Tutor) and St. Mary’s Academy 06-April 2013(Tutor).
Sister Catherine will be missed by her family, by her sisters in community and by many friends, co-workers and former students.
Services will be held on Saturday, April 20, 2013 at Our Lady of Wisdom Health Center Chapel, 5600 General de Gaulle Drive. Prayer Service at 9:30 am. Mass of Resurrection at 11:00 am. Burial will be at St. Vincent Cemetery (Soniat St.) In lieu of flowers, donations to St. Mary’s Academy would be preferred and appreciated. Arrangements by Jacob Schoen and Son Funeral Home.
