Bernard Francis

Bernard Francis passed away May 9, 2023, in Austin, TX at the age of 78. He was born in New Orleans, LA on August 8, 1944, to Preston Francis Sr. and Ruth Smith-Francis, their union was blessed with five sons. Ruth later married James Smith, Jr. James was very instrumental in the rearing of Bernard and his four brothers: Preston Jr., Wilfred, Lloyd, and Melvin. In 1964, Bernard married Betty Crosby, their union was blessed with two daughters: Christine Francis-Hymes and Courtney Francis and grandchildren: Sydney and Jayden Bridges. Betty and Bernard parted ways but remained lifelong friends.

Later in life, Bernard met his beloved companion L’ester “Alaska” Ellis and was blessed with an extended family which included Alaska’s children: Bruenetter Ellis, Eric Brack Jr. and Dr. Brenda Leflore-Brack, devoted grandson: Eric Brack and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Bernard was preceded in death by his mother Ruth Smith, father Preston Francis, stepfather James Smith, brothers: Preston Jr., Wilfred Sr. and Melvin Francis Sr. son in law: Montrell Hymes and granddaughter Calah Francis. He leaves to cherish his memories his brother Lloyd Francis, companion L’ester Ellis, daughters: Christine and Courtney and grandchildren: Sydney and Jayden, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and a host of relatives and friends.

There will be a visitation and funeral service on Saturday, May 27, 2023 at Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home, 5100 Pontchartrain Blvd. New Orleans, LA 70124. The visitation will begin at 9:00 a.m. until the service at 10:00 a.m. Interment will follow at Lake Lawn Park.
