Born in 1921 in Copenhagen, Denmark to Viggo and Elsie Jacobsen, who preceded her in death, she was also predeceased by her sister, Doris Smith and by her son, Thomas Michael Spicer. She is survived by her husband, Joachim Wedekind zur Horst, and by her remaining 6 children: Doris Spicer Agin, Diana Schneider, Henry C. Spicer, III, Bettina Owens, Alice Spicer, and Susan Spicer. She was blessed with 10 grandchildren: Randall, Doug, Jessica, Jonas, Kirsten, Jake, Erik, Veronica, Evelyn, and Kelly and 7 great-grandchildren.
Alice grew up in Europe and South America. Coming to the United States in 1940 as a young Navy bride, she lived throughout the Eastern United States from Key West, Florida to Newport, Rhode Island. After 3 years in the Netherlands the family moved to New Orleans, where they made their permanent home. Alice was always active - enjoying swimming, tennis, bowling, gardening, dancing, and entertaining. She was a loving mother, a talented cook, and a natural hostess with great joie de vivre and a spirited nature. She was an avid bridge player and delivered Meals on Wheels to the elderly well into her ‘80’s. In 1971 she married the love of her life, Joachim Wedekind, and together they travelled the world pursuing many adventures together, including 49 sea cruises.
A celebration of her life will be held as an open house at the Wedekind home on Sunday, July 24th, from 1 to 5pm, for family and friends.
The family would like to express their gratitude to Home Care Solutions and Compassus Hospice for their competent and compassionate care. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the LA or Jefferson SPCA.
