Alexander W. Washington, Jr., M.D., age 70, formerly of Covington, La. passed away Sunday, March 12, 2017 at his home, family at his side. Memorial services will be held Saturday, March 18, 2017 at 1:00PM at Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home, 5100 Pontchartrain Blvd., New Orleans, La. 70124. Dr. Washington was born December 23, 1946 in Natchez, Mississippi and attended Tougaloo College in Jackson, Mississippi where he graduated Magna Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Science Degree. He attended Howard University College of Medicine in Washington, D.C. where he earned his Doctor of Medicine in 1970. During his dedicated work as a physician, Dr. Washington honorably served with the United States Military from 1970 to 1981 working with the U.S. Public Health Service. While serving, he worked as Assistant Chief of Medicine and Director of Medical Education for the U.S. Public Health Service Hospital. After his military service was completed in 1981, Dr. Washington enjoyed working as a private practitioner with the Internal Medicine Group in New Orleans, La. until 2005. Most recently, Dr. Washington served as Clinical Associate Professor of Medicine, Section of Hematology / Medical Oncology at Tulane University. He was a member of various professional organizations, has conducted extensive research in the field of medical oncology and has authored many distinguished papers and publications devoted to treating disease. He received honors from both the Orleans Parish Medical Society and American Cancer Society. Dr. Washington enjoyed, above all else, spending time with his loving wife, sons and grandchildren. He loved seeing the smiles on their faces and worked endlessly to make sure that happened. He wanted his legacy to be his family continuing to live long, healthy and successful lives filled with loving one another. Alex is survived by loving wife, Pamela J. Washington; sons, Jarrad, Chris, Tony, and Alan; sister, Gleevia Wartts; niece, Niema Wartts; nephews, Akili and Nile; and grandchildren, Christopher J. Washington, Jr., Mason J. Washington, and Jaxson A. Washington.
