Albert Joseph Dowty, Jr. died peacefully at his home surrounded by his loving family on Tuesday, February 20, 2024, at the age of 101. Albert was born in New Orleans, LA on October 18, 2022. He grew up in uptown New Orleans and moved to Harahan, LA where he was a resident for the past 72 years. He was preceded in death by his loving and devoted wife of 73 years Teresa Johnson Dowty, his parents Albert J. Dowty, Sr. and May Inez Wagner Dowty, his daughter Linda Anne Dowty and his brother and sister, Donald Dowty, Sr. and Rita Dowty Loog. He will be sadly missed by his daughters Arleen Dowty Broderick (John), Jeanette Dowty Lauve (Michael), Maureen Dowty Simpson (Andrew), and his son Robert Paul Dowty (Karen). He was the proud grandfather of Joshua Douglas Kern, Nicholas Michael Lauve (Meghan), Allison Dowty Clinkingbeard (Chandler), Brandon Roquet Sanchez (Jasie), and Chelsea Elizabeth Sanchez and great-grandfather of Henry Dooley Lauve, Charlotte Elizabeth Sanchez, Kate James Sanchez, and Reese Anne Sanchez. Albert was an altar server at his elementary school and church, St. Francis Assisi and a trumpet player in his high school band at Holy Cross. After graduation, Albert served as a Navy Signalman in World War II from 1942-1946. He performed his duties in the North Atlantic, Mediterranean, and South Pacific. He was employed by Entergy (NOPSI) for 35 years. He and his wife Teresa were married on April 24, 1947, and raised 5 wonderful children in Harahan. They were original members of St. Rita of Cascia Catholic Church, and Al was a founding member of the Knights of Columbus of St. Rita Council. He was an usher at St. Rita for over two decades and received the 20-year Service Award as Servant to the Poor with the Society of St. Vincent de Paul. He was also honored with the prestigious Order of St. Louis Award in recognition of his leadership and dedicated service to the church of St. Rita of Harahan. The Lantern Light and Feed Jesus Award was given to Albert for 21 years of making sandwiches for the homeless at St. Joseph Church every Monday without fail. He along with Teresa were dedicated Adoration volunteers during the 4am time slot one day a week for many years. Aside from his devotion to his church and serving others, Al had a zest for life, traveling, and a good time. He spent many years as a Boy Scout leader for Troop 115 St. Rita Parish and took the troop on many camping trips including a two-week trek to Yellowstone. During retirement, Al and Teresa spent weeks each year traveling the country with friends. Both also loved playing cards with their respective card groups, and Al especially loved meeting weekly for breakfast with the DD Club of Harahan. Since he was a teenager, he loved fishing at Grand Isle where he later had a camp. He absolutely loved Grand Isle and was there as recently as this past November. Al was an avid gardener who grew incredible vegetables and flowers. He was a gracious, unselfish man who constantly asked what he could do for you. His presence was formidable, and he positively affected all who knew him during his century of life. Albert will be sorely missed by his family and friends whom he has impacted with an incredible love. Family and friends are invited to attend a funeral Mass on Friday, February 23, 2024, at 11:00 AM at Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home, 5100 Pontchartrain Blvd. Visitation will begin at 9:00 AM until service time. Interment will follow in Lake Lawn Park Mausoleum.
