He is survived by his sisters, Janice Carlson of New London, Ct.; Karen (Charles)
Burgess of Waterford, Ct and Jeanette Abbott of Oswego, N.Y.; his only grandchild,
William D. Tuttle of Harrisburg, Pa. and nieces Vicky (Mike) Spooner, Heather (Jim)
O’Shea and Regina (Jack) Broome. There are also several great nieces and nephews.
A host of AA members considered him as their family as he did them.
William was predeceased by his parents, Elmer K. and Olga (Sleights) Carlson; his only
child, Jacquelyn M. Tuttle; nephews Daniel and Scott Awker; brother-in-law Bruce
Abbott.
He served in the Army (1965-67) one of those years in Pleiku, Vietnam, where he was
a door gunner and a helicopter crew chief. Upon returning to Ct. he worked for R&R
Donnelley & Sons in Old Saybrook, Ct. He celebrated his sobriety date each year - May
17, 1986 - and helped many people in AA by giving them courage, help and hope. He
often spoke at meetings. His grandson remembers him as a proud Vietnam Vet who
often marched in parades; a very generous man who loved to play golf and go out to
eat, never thought of himself, always put others first, always wanted to lend a helping
hand, was in good spirits the majority of the time and loved to crack a joke. He was
loved by many and will be missed by many. There are no services planned at this time.
