Richard "Smurf" Edward Swaney Sr.

Richard was born on May 14, 1947, in Old Lyme, the son of James Swaney, Sr., and Elsie Itts Swaney.

Richard worked for the Town of East Lyme for 34 years before retiring. He loved spending time with his family. He had a passion for crabbing, grilling, playing cards and bingo. He also enjoyed returning his five centers.

Richard is survived by his son, Richard Swaney, Jr. and his wife Tina of Waterford; daughters Cindy Swaney of Quaker Hill, and Tammie Schenking and her husband David of Colchester; brothers Kenny Swaney, Sr. and Leon Swaney; sisters Kate McKim and Susan Coli all of Old Lyme; 6 grandchildren Felicia Cummings and her husband Branden of Gales Ferry, Richard Swaney, III and his wife Bryanna of Waterford, Samantha Pasqualini and her fiancé Justin Elliott of Norwich, Haley Weber and her husband Jaden of Quaker Hill, Adam and Sabrina Schenking of Colchester and 5 great grandchildren.

In addition to his loving wife Lucy, he was predeceased by his siblings James, Jr., Norman and Thomas Swaney, Sr., and Mildred Thomas.

Richard will be missed by everyone who had the pleasure of knowing him. This isn't goodbye Smurf we will see you later.

Calling hours will be held on Thursday, August 31st from 6-8pm at Fulton-Theroux Funeral Home, 181 Ocean Ave., New London. A graveside service will be held on Friday September 1st at 11am at Duck River Cemetery, McCurdy Rd., Old Lyme.
