Kathleen (Kathy) Diane McCutcheon passed on July 22, 2022, while surrounded by her family at Lawrence & Memorial Hospital in New London, Connecticut. She was born January 17, 1945 in Anchorage, Alaska, to her parents, Ruth Knott Booth and Gordon Gerald Booth.
She lived a life imbued with a reverence for nature and joy, and her kind, generous spirit permeated the hearts of each of her loved ones, many of whom shared her final moments and guided her graceful transition. She was a creator who possessed a keen eye for beauty and an effortless ability to bring her visions to life. She was a multimedia artist, proficient in floral design, pottery, oil, acrylic, and watercolor painting. She further enjoyed baking decadent desserts, among a myriad of other crafts.
Kathy studied Art and Design at Washington University in St. Louis, and graduated from Rittners School of Floral Design in Boston. She also earned her degree at Three Rivers Community College while raising her four children, Christopher, Erin, Megan and Ethan McCutcheon. The years she spent caring for her loving children were also spent studying, crafting, gardening, and caring for people with disabilities at the Department of Mental Retardation for 20 years.
Her remarkable creations have delighted many, including her six grandchildren, Benjamin Meadows, Brandy Fanning, Hannah McNabney, Foster McCutcheon, Aidan McNabney, and Gabriel McCutcheon; and even her great-grandson, Landon Meadows. Also benefiting from her expressions and singsong disposition are those who attended her pottery classes, Innovations, which she instructed for 5 years. She touched many hearts with floral arrangements designed in the shop she and her former husband shared, The House of Flowers on Captain’s Walk in New London, CT. In addition to her own businesses, she taught art, floral design and pottery classes through New London Adult Education for many years, and worked at the Flower Box on Ocean Avenue in New London. She was inspired by the natural world, connecting to flora and fauna alike with ease, which revealed itself in many of her works as well as in her intuitive way of life.
Kathy will be fondly remembered for her imagination, tolerance and acceptance of others, cheerful demeanor, and ability to laugh and bring people together. In addition to her many descendents, she is survived by her sister Althea Booth-Athenian, who shares her compassionate nature, and her dear cousins Michael and Lyell Fox, and beloved niece and nephew, Aiyana Athenian and Jonathan Booth. She is predeceased by her brother, Gerald Booth, and her parents.
A Celebration of her Life will be held August 21st at Harkness Memorial Park in Waterford at 3pm.
