Dear Gavin,

I met your Dad when I was in my early 30’s. It was my 2nd or 3rd year participating in the yearly Hygienic art show, which at that time, was held at the El n Gee Club.

The El n Gee was a dank, dark bar on Greene Street in New London, painted all black inside. For the art show, black panels had been brought in to add wall space.

My piece that year was a drawing with colored pencil. It featured a large ring in the center and could be rotated around a thumb tack that attached it to a sheet underneath.

I don’t remember what was on the paper underneath the ring, or what the purpose of my piece was. The title of my piece was “O.” 

It was probably a Sunday afternoon I was in the bar looking at the artwork that I met your Dad. He was looking too and I noticed him—he’s so handsome! 

We started talking. At some point I asked him what his favorite piece was. He responded “Well I think my favorite is ‘O’.”

We had a brief friendship. I was dating someone and didn’t tell him—which he forgave me for. This was all before you, obviously.

We reconnected when your Dad brought you and Marlene to All Souls. What struck me always about your Dad, from the moment I met him (other than his handsomeness!), was his amazing mind.

The way we met is an example. In a room full of art, what he picked out wasn’t the aesthetically pleasing piece but the piece that stimulated thought. 

But as you all shared, his intellect never overtook his capacity for love, integrity, and kindness. He had strong opinions and high morals. All of that came back to me during your reflections.

My heart goes out to you all. May your memories and all he gave you comfort you in the days to come.

My prayers for my good friend, Brian of some 40 years! The world lost a great man, but heaven received a super hero! The sound system in heaven just became eternally perfect! My prayers go out to your mother, and, son, Gavin, and all of your friends and family. I thank you, Brian, for reconnecting over the past 5 years, and thank you for your audio expertise in improving the sound in my house. The only sound missing now which we all want back is the sound of your voice! Your wit and humor is the sound most pleasing in this world, which now is sorely missed. Until we meet again, may God's grace give you everlasting peace and joy. No more stress, or pain. YOU will be missed here on earth for sure! God bless!

My condolences on the loss of Brian.  He was a former student of mine who was quick-witted and a pleasure to know.  His loss at such a young age is tragic.

I met Brian about 30 years ago through his North Stonington childhood friends. He was a great guy. I hadn't seen him in many years and I'm very sorry to learn of his passing. My memories are all good ones from many fun times. Thinking of Brian always makes me smile.

He was a wonderful neighbor, always saying hello and caring for the neighborhood cats. He will be missed dearly.

Gavin, if you get to see this I am so sorry.  I didn’t know and if I did I would have driven up.   He was a good man and I will miss him.  If you can find me or Marty on FB or wherever please friend us or give us a call.   My condolences to you and the entire family.
