Born in New London on March 7, 1932, to Lucy Williams Loring and Joseph Osmond Hull, she graduated from Fitch High School and attended Mitchell College. Barbara was a no-nonsense woman ahead of her times. Working for SNET for 31 years, she rose through the ranks. Starting as an engineering clerk, she retired as manager of Circuit Design and Equipment Provisions, in a male dominated workforce. She was an avid sportswoman; bowling, playing golf, tennis, teaching herself to ski and, in her Porsche “ABOMB”, competed in Sports Car of America rallies.
It was through cars that she met her husband, Edward “Skip” Randolph Eberle, whom she married on July 8, 1966. New adventures ensued. B and Skip relished sailing their sloop “North Star”, skiing the Alps, and traveling the country in their motorhome. They were often accompanied by Barbara’s best friend, her brother Richard Hull. After retirement, she continued to golf and play tennis weekly, well into her 80’s.
Later in life, Barbara enjoyed gardening and woodworking; gifting birdhouses to many in the community. She oversaw the building of a “Beetle Cat” sailboat which she christened “Skip’s Star” and donated to the Mystic Seaport in memory of her husband. Barbara supported many local organizations and charities such as Save the River, Save the Hills, Harkness, Friends of Feral Felines in East Lyme and numerous others.
Barbara will be remembered fondly by her stepdaughters, Susan Levy (Steven) and Anne Eberle, step granddaughters, Dana Dolyak (Sean) and Kate Sawyer (Ian), her nieces and nephews, Lynn Davis, Cynthia Truelove, Anne Rowley, Joe Hull and Edward Hull and her “Oswegathchie Family”, Diane and Bob Dumont, Bill and Donna Pepin and Chris and Bill Kohl.
The family wishes to extend heartfelt thanks to Barbara’s wonderful caregivers: Yari, Tammy, Kate, Comalita, and Anna, Hartford Healthcare Hospice team and to Attorney McGarry for his services in honoring Barbara’s wishes to remain at home.
Services will be private. Barbara’s memory may be honored by a donation to Friends of Feral Felines Inc. or Hospice PO Box 791 East Lyme CT 06333.
