Nancy embarked on her journey of service and achievement from a young age. Demonstrating exceptional determination and commitment, she graduated two years ahead of her peers at New Iberia Senior High School, having diligently attended summer school in Lafayette. It was during this time that she encountered the love of her life, Unell Verret, with whom she shared a deep and enduring bond. They exchanged vows in 1953, marking the beginning of a cherished partnership filled with love, mutual respect, and shared passions.
Known for her vivacious spirit and zest for life, Nancy found joy in various activities, including bowling, dancing, and fishing, particularly relishing these moments spent alongside her beloved husband. However, it was her unwavering dedication to serving others that truly defined her character. Nancy possessed a heart overflowing with compassion, always ready to extend a helping hand to those in need and tirelessly advocating for the betterment of her community.
Her volunteer work was not merely a duty but a calling she embraced wholeheartedly. As an active member of New Iberia's Handicapped Reserve Officers, Nancy worked tirelessly to ensure that designated spots for the physically handicapped remained accessible to those who truly required them. Additionally, she selflessly offered her time and expertise at the library, assisting individuals with filing their taxes.
Nancy's commitment to service extended beyond these roles as she served as Treasurer of the Verret-Bourgois American Legion Post 335 during her husband Unell's tenure as Commander. Together, they exemplified the values of duty, honor, and sacrifice, leaving an enduring legacy within the legion and beyond.
Furthermore, Nancy held the position of Treasurer for the New Iberia Waterworks in her district, playing a pivotal role in securing access to city water and sewage for her fellow district members at no additional cost. Her dedication and strategic acumen significantly improved the quality of life for countless individuals within her community, leaving an indelible impact on their lives.
Those left to cherish her memory are her three daughters, Cyndi V. Gassie (Trey); Trudie Verret; Kathy V. McCain (Jon); one son, Brian Paul Verret; grandson, Matthew Guercio (Dustin Barbour); step-grandchildren, Shannon McCain (Ashley); Misty M. Breaux (Brandon); Lindsey M. Guidry (Joshua); eight step-great-grandchildren, and her sister, Joyce V. Ackal.
