NEW IBERIA – A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated for Marie Ackal Haik, 92, at 1:00 pm Saturday, May 23, 2015 at St. Peter’s Catholic Church. Mrs. Haik will be laid to rest at Memorial Park Cemetery alongside her husband.
A gathering of family and friends will be held at Evangeline Funeral Home of New Iberia on Friday from from 4:00 pm until 9:00 pm, with the Rosary being prayed at 6:30 pm. Visiting hours will resume on Saturday from 9:00 am until 12:30 pm.
Marie Ackal Haik was born May 25, 1922 in New Iberia to the late George Ackal, Sr. and the late Adele Gabriel Ackal. On Wednesday, May 20, 2015, just five days before her 93rd birthday, Marie passed away peacefully, at Iberia Extended Care Hospital with her family at her side.
Marie was retired from the Iberia Parish School Board. She taught as a Title 1 Language Arts Teacher with English as a second language. Marie was a longtime parishioner of St. Peter’s Catholic Church and a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Lions Club. She enjoyed entertaining and spending time with her family. Marie will be missed dearly.
Survivors include her children, Judith Haik Dennis and husband Hon. James L. Dennis of New Orleans, Eleanor Haik Bazer and husband Rod Bazer of Lafayette, and Morris M. Haik Jr. and wife Eugenie Mixon Haik of New Iberia; her grandchildren, Hilary Hurst Landry and husband Mickey Landry, Calais Hurst Waring and husband Dr. Patrick Waring, David Etie and wife Laura Viator Etie, Renee Etie, Angela Bazer Michalek, Andrea Bazer Wahlen, Alicia Bazer Bourgeois, Morris Michael Haik, III and wife Karly Champagne Haik, Johnnah Haik Theriot and husband Ryan Theriot, Eugenie Haik Lemoine and husband Blake Lemoine; her great grandchildren, Sophia, Miriam and Patrick Landry, Gabriel Coulon, Alea, Alyse, and Luke Etie, Brock, Brant, and Spencer Michalek, Bryce and Cohen Wahlen, Kyle and Kolby Bourgeois, Houston, Macey, and Georgia Theriot, Morris Michael Haik, IV, Mixon and Myles Haik, and Elise and Adele Gabriel Lemoine.
Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Morris M. Haik, Sr.; and her sisters and brothers, Stella Ackal Barnett, Lucille Ackal Powell, Lillian Ackal Johnson, Elaine Ackal Dore’, George Ackal, Jr., Louis Ackal, Sr., Joe Ackal and William Ackal.
Serving as pallbearers are Mickey Landry, Michael Haik, David and Luke Etie, Ryan Theriot, Blake Lemoine, and Patrick Waring. Honorary pallbearers are Rod Bazer, Billy, Eddie and Jimmy Dore, Richard Johnson, Louis, Steve, Wayne, Eddie, Ronnie and George Ackal, Ted and Dicky Haik, and Hon. James Dennis.
