NEW IBERIA – Funeral services will be conducted for Margaret “Maggi” Romero, age 73, at 2:00 pm on Wednesday, July 1, 2015 at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church with Fr. Paul Onuegbe officiating. Interment will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 11:00 am until 8:00 pm on Tuesday with a Rosary at 6:30 pm. The funeral home will reopen at 9:00 am on Wednesday until service time.
Margaret was born on February 18, 1942 to Aaron and Jeanne LeBlanc Romero. A native and resident of New Iberia, Ms. Romero passed away at 10:30 am on Saturday, June 27, 2015 at Our Lady of Lourdes Regional Medical Center.
Maggi saw her future in her first mentor, Elementary school coach Bill Wallace, and then set out to achieve it. She was a 1959 graduate of New Iberia High School; earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Physical Education and English from the University of Southwestern Louisiana in 1963; a Master’s degree in Physical Education from the University of North Carolina in 1968; an education Specialist Degree from the University of Southwestern Louisiana in 1973 and a Plus 30 from Louisiana State University thereafter.
Maggie coached six N.I.S.H volleyball teams to District Championships, brought her teams to the finals four in 12 of 13 seasons and won state titles in 1971 and 1973. She also coached the girls’ basketball team leading them to the State Championship game in 1980. Maggie was named coach of the year for volleyball in 1973 and for girls’ basketball in 1980.
Ms. Romero taught English, Physical Education, Health, Drivers Education, supervised student teaching over her nearly 50 year career. In addition, she also coached at the University of Massachusetts, Stephen F. Austin, and LSU.
She played on many successful softball teams on a local, state, and national basis- including the Cajettes, Allain’s Gems, Howard Trucking, and Musson Patout. Maggi was inducted into the New Iberia Recreational Department Hall of Fame in 2005 and the New Iberia Senior High Hall of Fame in 2009.
She is survived by her sisters, Beverly Credeur, Maudry Kennedy, and Nancy Terrell; and her many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Aaron and Jeanne LeBlanc Romero.
Pallbearers will be Charlie Williams, Delbert Soileau, Larry Fremin, Barron Kennedy, Tony Terrell, and Matthew Broussard.
