NEW IBERIA – A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated for Lota Duhon O’Brien Charpentier, age 86, at 10:00 am Friday, May 12, 2017 at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church. Fr. Bill John Melancon will be the celebrant. Mrs. Charpentier will be laid to rest at Memorial Park Cemetery immediately following the mass.
A gathering of family and friends will be held at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church on Friday from 9:00 am until time of the mass.
Lota was born December 6, 1931 in Duson, Louisiana to the late Claude Pete Duhon and Eunice Robin Duhon, and passed away peacefully on Sunday, May 7, 2017 at a Lafayette hospital, with her family at her side.
Lota, affectionately known by family and friends as “Totsie” was a homemaker who devoted her life to her family and her church. Totsie was a longtime parishioner of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, where she served as a Eucharistic Minister, brought communion to the shut-ins, and assisted with the Mass held at Belle Teche Nursing Home. Totsie also donated her time to the Social Service Center and St. Francis Diner serving the less fortunate.
Some of her favorite pastimes included crocheting and cooking and sharing meals with family and friends. Totsie leaves behind many fond memories that will be cherished by all who knew and loved her.
Survivors include her children, Brenda Amy and husband Eddie, Eugene O’Brien and wife Joy, Perry O’Brien, and Denny O’Brien and life partner WR Holman; her step children, Jan Romero and husband Ernie, Tammy Doucet and husband Edwin, and Trudy Hargis and husband Huey; seven grandchildren, Alison O. Adams, Shawn O’Brien, Ryan O’Brien, Jacob O’Brien, Caleb O’Brien, Brendan Botts and Eugene Botts; six great grandchildren; half-sister, Gayle Broussard; and her half-brothers, Claude Duhon, Jr. and Glenn Duhon.
Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of first marriage, Eugene Joseph O’Brien; husband of second marriage, Shanley Charpentier; her son and daughter-in-law, Brian A. O’Brien and Kay O’Brien; and two step-children, Mike Charpentier and Jody Charpentier.
Memorial contributions may be made in Totsie’s name to the Disch-DeClouet Social Service Center, 432 Bank Ave. New Iberia, LA 70560 or to the St. Francis Diner, 1201 S. Hopkins St. New Iberia, LA 70560.
