George Avery Rogers, age 86, of New Iberia passed away on Monday, February 12, 2024. George was born on September 24, 1937 to his late mother Agnes Harrington Rogers, and his late father Augustine Rogers. He passed away on Monday February 12, 2024, at his residence surrounded by his beloved family after his battle with cancer.
Many knew him as the Bus Driver for bus #8 as he was employed with the Iberia Parish School Board for 40 years. He has always been described as such a caring, fun bus driver always letting the kids listen to 94.5 on the radio because it was their favorite station. All his students loved him. Prior to that he was a Dragline Operator for many years.
A native of Bayou Petit Anse, he was a lifelong resident of the Lee Station area. He enjoyed trolling with his dad when he was younger. Camping with his wife, spending time with his family and friends, cooking and watching LSU Football. He especially loved riding his beloved dog Lady Bug on the golf cart.
Known to many as Papa or Pepaw he was the best husband, father and grandfather. There will never be another like you and and he was a world of fun. We will miss you dearly Pa. You were certainly special to him if you got the pleasure of hearing his favorite sayings “Mais its early” and “how you do sha”
He is survived by his wife of 67 years Gwenlyn Landry Rogers and their 5 children; Mike Rogers (Sharon), Kathy Rogers Hollier (Donald), Stephen Rogers, Brian Rogers (Debbie) and Deneen Rogers Arabie (Cliff); 16 grandchildren, Stacie Rogers Cooke, Cory Rogers, Shane Rogers, Pamela Boutte, Alex Wazenkewitz, Eric Guidry, Katie Hollier Romero, Donovan Hollier, Damian Hollier, Cal Rogers, Craig Rogers, Cassie Rogers, Cortni Rogers Segura, Chantel Arabie Peltier, Danielle Arabie Charpentier, and Brittany Arabie Bourque. 36 great grandchildren, and 5 great- great grandchildren; Brother, Donald “Don” Rogers (Betty Fitch); brother-in-law, Greg Landry (Mei); Godchildren, Tracy Comer, and Marnell Fremin.
Along with his parents he is preceded in death by his sister; Betty Jean Rogers Dartez, and Gloria Dean Rogers Robicheaux; brother, Jimmy Rogers; brother-in-law, Herbert “Boo” Dartez and John Lee Robicheaux.
A visitation to celebrate George's life will be held on Wednesday, February 14, 2024, from 4:00 PM to 9:00 PM at Evangeline Funeral Home. A rosary will be recited by the Men’s Rosary Group at 6:00 PM on Wednesday at the funeral home. Additional visitation will take place on Thursday, February 15, 2024, from 8:00 AM to 10:45 AM,
A funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 AM at Evangeline Funeral Home with Fr. Buddy Breaux officiating
George will be laid to rest in Broussard Cemetery, located at 2414 Migues Rd, New Iberia, Louisiana.
Serving as pallbearers will be Christopher Colletti, Hunter Rogers, Damian Hollier, Donovan Hollier, Cal Rogers and Craig Rogers.
George Avery Rogers will be deeply missed by all who knew him. May he rest in peace.
